piazza san marco. 7 am.

In the early hours of the morning, when the sun has just risen over the rooftops of Venice, life begins to pulsate in St Mark's Square. This series captures that special moment when the city awakens from its slumber.

The first tourists are already on their way, their silhouettes blurred against the majestic buildings. Although you never have the square all to yourself, there is a special atmosphere at this hour. The tranquillity of the night slowly gives way to the hustle and bustle of the day, and you can literally feel Venice catching its breath for the coming rush of visitors.

These images show St Mark's Square in an in-between state - no longer asleep, but not yet fully awake. They reveal the special charm of early morning in Venice, when the city hesitantly reveals its secrets and the anticipation of the new day is in the air.
